The Orwell Prize relies on – and is most grateful for – the support and generosity of the following sponsors:
I first became involved with the Orwell Prize many years ago. It had been set up and organised by Sir Bernard Crick for a number of years prior to my coming on board. The awards had grown in stature and were taking on a life of their own. It became obvious that more people needed to be involved in organising the whole affair. Whilst I was happy to allow those with better connections than I when it comes to recognising the right people to get involved with the awards, I am very much in favour of it going onwards and upwards as Orwell's relevance is still as important today as it was when he was alive. It is to this end that I will do all in my power to help acheive the status that the awards deserve.
Since its foundation in 1930, The Political Quarterly has explored and debated the key issues of the day. It is dedicated to political and social reform and has long acted as a conduit between policy-makers, commentators and academics. The Political Quarterly addresses current issues through serious and thought-provoking articles, written in clear jargon-free English. According to Professor Lord Raymond Plant: 'The Political Quarterly plays host to some of the best writing about both topical issues and underlying trends in UK and European politics.'
The Media Standards Trust is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that aims to find ways to foster the highest standards of excellence in news journalism and ensure public trust in news is nurtured. We exist because we believe high standards of news and information are critical to the health of our democratic society.
These standards are being challenged by the enormous, revolutionary changes in the way in which news and information are produced, funded, packaged, delivered and consumed. In many areas these changes are leading to; less accurate reporting, less substantial sourcing, an escalation in the use of ‘manufactured news’, an increase in self-censorship, a growth of subjective over objective reporting, and a reduction in sustained, in-depth reporting on the ground, particularly investigative reporting. Of course there have always been high and low standards and always will be, but right now, as the news media is transformed, these standards are under threat as never before.
We will work on behalf of the public and the public interest to find ways to preserve and foster high standards. We do this through a combination of debate, research and initiatives. We host online and offline debates about standards in the news media. We conduct research into areas of concern – such as the influence of government spin on the independent media, the increasing power of marketing and public relations, the accountability of news organisations, the effectiveness of press self-regulation. And we pilot initiatives to address specific challenges.
