The Orwell Prize 2010 Launch: What next for Burma?
The Orwell Prize 2010 opened for entries on Thursday 29th October 2009 with an evening of events on the theme, 'What next for Burma?', marking the 75th anniversary of Orwell's Burmese Days.
The evening, held at the Frontline Club, began with Andrew Mitchell MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, and a Q&A session. After a short break, Jean Seaton (Director of the Prize), announced the judges of the Orwell Prize 2010. Alan Cox followed with a reading from one of Orwell's preliminary sketches for Burmese Days, 'An Incident in Rangoon', and the evening concluded with a discussion, 'What next for Burma?', with Dr Michael Charney (SOAS), Soe Win Than (BBC Burmese Service), Pascal Khoo Thwe (author of From the Land of the Green Ghosts: A Burmese Odyssey) and Derek Tonkin (former British ambassador to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos).
