Blog Prize 2009

In the year that we have made George Orwell a blogger, the Orwell Prize is delighted to announce a Special Prize for Blogs in 2009.
Running alongside the Book Prize and Journalism Prize this year, submissions will open on 22nd October 2008 and close on 14th January 2009, for all work published for the first time in the calendar year 2008. A longlist of 12 blogs will be announced on Wednesday 25th February 2009, a shortlist of 6 blogs on Wednesday 25th March 2009, and the winner at the Orwell Prize Awards Ceremony on 22nd April 2009.
The longlist for the Blog Prize will be decided by the Journalism Prize jury, overseen by the Director of the Prize. The Journalism Prize and Book Prize juries will then merge to decide on shortlists and winners for all three Prizes.
In addition to the Rules and Regulations and Values, the following rules should be observed:
- The Orwell Prize rewards those who achieve George Orwell’s ambition ‘to make political writing into an art’. Entries should therefore be of equal excellence in style and content.
- ‘Political writing’ is defined in the widest possible sense, and encompasses subjects including (but not limited to) party politics, social issues, public policy, the media, conflict, public services, history, economics, the environment, local government, and international relations.
- Entries should be per blogger, rather than per blog – in the case of group blogs, for example, each individual blogger is eligible, but the group blog cannot be entered on its own.
- Bloggers should submit permalinks for 10 posts of their choice.
- Bloggers should have a clear relationship with the United Kingdom or Ireland; the intended audience of the blog should be British or Irish.
- Blogs hosted outside of the UK and Ireland are eligible as long as the intended audience is British or Irish, and the blogger has a clear relationship with the UK.
- Blog posts which are simply online versions of articles printed in other publications, or are links to such articles, are not eligible. Any bloggers falling into this category are advised to enter the Journalism Prize.
- Those bloggers who wish to remain anonymous may enter by their public username – their real identity will not be divulged by the Orwell Prize.
