What do you think about Orwell's tale of one man's journey to his childhood home, an elegy for a bygone England?

'Underlying the entertaining fable, underlying even the brilliant satire, is George Orwell's vigorous, inescapable warning: Don't be a parrot. Think! Think for yourself!' 'It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.' So writes Orwell in the first line of his most (in)famous book. Why not write a first line of your own in our discussion forum?

Orwell's tale of working as a Parisian plongeur and tramping between London lodging-houses and 'spikes' is a rich evocation of poverty and human nature. It also contains some advice which Orwell chose not to take from his Russian friend, Boris: 'Writing is bosh. There is only one way to make money at writing, and that is to marry a publisher's daughter.'

Part reportage, part polemic, 'The Road to Wigan Pier' sees Orwell on a journey across the North of England, but also into his own past, and towards his future views on socialism.
